Once in awhile you spot something that just speaks to you and you have to have it.
This hand-made jounal with it’s rough leather cover and hand crafted paper was just that. Everything about this speaks of ancient skills and personal craftsmanship and you’ll find no machinery or mass-production tarnishing the look and feel of this journal. It is truly a nice find and after receiving it we ordered two more.
As described on the Leather Village website, “The high quality handmade paper is made by recycled virgin Egyptian cotton pulp. It’s environment friendly with the original deckle edge effect and lasts for generations as no chemical is used.”
The deckle edge is very rough, not machine cut, but almost sort of like it was hand-torn and stitched to the cover with leather stripping. Each folio gathered, folded in ten-sheets and perfect-bound to form this 200 -page crafted journal.
The buffalo-hide leather is rough and heavy, adding to the hand-crafted look and feel. (I presume it’s ‘water buffalo’ and not American bison, as I think this is an import, the pictures from their website appear to be South Asian to me.) A strap with a brass-hook enclosure sets off the bindery and keeps the journal secure in its closure. To add to the craftsmanship, there is a single card added to the back with the craftsman’s name and picture from Leather Village.
My wife is the one who spotted this and she loves it. She’ll add her thoughts and her recipes, hand-writing the pages. It will become a keepsake in our family for generations I’m sure!
